Andrew Brechner, Age 11 from Ithaca, NY started hitting racquetballs and tennis balls with his dad, Adam, at two years old. He added travel soccer and baseball at five and eight after that. He recently added skiing and hockey to that list as well as golf and disc golf. Last winter, his dad found pickleball after a lengthy tennis career and racquetball stint. Andrew started playing once a week at the Ithaca YMCA but it wasn't until the summer of 2019 that we started to get serious, purchasing a lightweight, small grip Selkirk that would work for his size. He started playing against intermediate adults adding spins and a touch game, when all he like to do before was crush the ball.
In November of 2018, he and his father decided to test out his skills in tournaments by playing at the Miller Center, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in intermediate men's doubles where father and son took silver, losing only one match in the gold medal round. They played their first USAPA tournament at Slippery Rock University a few weeks later, going undefeated in 3.0 men's doubles with Andrew being targeted for the majority of the shots. A lot of his growth can be contributed to him playing full time with advanced players at Joycrest Sports in Elmira, who have accepted him as a player so graciously.
In February of 2020, Andrew played in his second USAPA tournament on Long Island for the New York Open. On the Friday, he went undefeated in men's singles, taking the gold against all of the adults. He teamed up with a 3.0 thirteen year old girl he he had never met to play 3.5 mixed doubles and Saturday, and although they didn't medal, they can close to winning numerous games against tough adult competition. He and his dad took bronze on Sunday in 3.5 men's doubles, with Andrew being targeted a very strong group of men's players.
His goal is to continue to improve and one day become a professional pickleball player. Now at eleven years old, he hopes to reach the 4.0 level by the end of the year. He has been a member of the Boy Scouts for five years, has played guitar for three years, and has run a podcast called Theme Park Families for almost three years now (and is considering a name change to Theme Park Pickleball Families!) He loves the fact that so many people watch his matches since it's such an oddity to have a small junior player battling adults. His goal is to inspire other kids to start playing pickleball as well and has spoken to numerous kids on the sidelines. He knows this sport is about to really take off and wants to be a part of that growth.

Hartsville SC Jumps Into a Juniors Program
My name is Chuck Mullen and I am the Recreation Supervisor for the City of Hartsville Parks and Recreation. I wanted to bring to your attention a tremendous community event we just concluded this morning. Hartsville High School is right across the street from our recreation complex. 2 days last week and this morning, we partnered with a Nutrition teacher there, who teaches 3 classes, in introducing her classes to Pickleball. The classes came over to our building during their class time and with the help of our Hartsville Ambassador, Patti Sponseller, and several local players, the kids were taught the basics of the game and given the opportunity to play!
It was very successful and a local Newspaper reporter came in this morning to take some pictures and talk with the local players. Having these classes come in is very likely leading us to now putting together regular court time after school hours for kids that want to keep learning and playing!
